Create a Positive Attitude
September 4, 2008
I cannot express just how important it is to create and maintain a positive attitude and belief in your ability to accomplish your goals. Creating a positive attitude will determine how successful you are in life and ultimately your ability to accomplish what you want. The idea that your thoughts and belief in your circumstances will determine your outcomes in life has been highlighted throughout the ages in spiritual scripture and demonstrated more recently in scientific research.
Hope in Faith Theory
Today, numerous studies have been conducted to support this idea that all things are possible to you if you believe they are possible. For instance, recent research by C.R. Snyder, a positive psychologist, does a great job of laying it out in a theory he developed called Hope Theory.
For Snyder, hope is one’s ability to identify ways to achieve their goals and to motivate oneself via thinking that will lead them to explore and use their identified pathways. Furthermore, Snyder takes the theory further by writing on how success or lack thereof will determine happiness. In essence showing how your thoughts and behavior will determine levels of success and happiness over time.
According to his theory, people with high levels of belief in their abilities conceptualize obstacles differently (looking at them as challenges as opposed to goal killers), and are able to develop multiple pathways to achieve a goal which allows them to react to roadblocks that pop up in the pursuit of a goal and engage in more positive self talk suck as “I know I can do this” during the course of their quest. Therefore, self-feedback plays a huge roll in this process. As the Bible says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he”.
Snyder’s model provides a compelling argument for the important role that your thoughts and beliefs play in the level of success you experience. So if you are experiencing defeat in any area of your life today, look to your beliefs in that area. Are you saying I can do it and believing it; or are you stuck in a negative though process that is causing your defeat?
